Why Barack Obama is AWESOME

So Barack Obama's campaign has started a Web site that people can go to to "fight the smears": You know, those irritating e-mails you get about Barack Obama not being eligible to be president because he's not a natural-born citizen. Yeah, I know. I really don't know why he needed to start a Web site, all he had to do was send everyone to, and people who believe that shit and pass it on aren't going to believe his Web site anyway. That, and you deal with rumors the same way you deal with trolls: Ignore them and they go away.

He's really got enough to deal with without having to deal with Internet rumor shit, like repairing his cred with America's Muslims (tell your volunteers to stop moving hijabis out of your photo ops! but thanks for the apology ...), because being a Muslim ain't a "smear" you know. The answer shouldn't be, "Barack Obama is not a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim and is a committed Christian," but rather "Barack Obama isn't a Muslim, but thanks for thinking so, he takes that as a high compliment. Because isn't it great if ANYONE of ANY religious faith, or none at all, can be president? Isn't that what makes this country so freakin' great? That's what FREEDOM is all about, folks! And the day we start denying people their full rights because of their religious affiliation is the day that this country stops being free."

Anyway, I found this great post on Slate on the rumors Obama shouldn't correct. Here's the ones that cracked me right up. Enjoy.

Barack Obama wears a FLAG PIN at all times. Even in the shower.

Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.

Barack Obama has the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE tattooed on his stomach. It's upside-down, so he can read it while doing sit-ups.

Barack Obama is a DEVOUT CHRISTIAN. His favorite book is the BIBLE, which he has memorized. His name means HE WHO LOVES JESUS in the ancient language of Aramaic. He is PROUD that Jesus was an American.
Barack Obama goes to church every morning. He goes to church every afternoon. He goes to church every evening. He is IN CHURCH RIGHT NOW.

Barack Obama's skin is the color of AMERICAN SOIL.

Barack Obama says that Americans cling to GUNS and RELIGION because they are AWESOME.

Senator Obama is NOT a Dirty Muslim!

"What you won't hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge," says Mr. Obama, while denouncing statements of him being a Muslim as a smear. Why is the presidential candidate who claims to be religiously inclusive is treating the word "Muslim" as an insult? Apparently, it is OK for Mr. Obama to be associated with terrorists like William Ayers or racists like Jeremiah Wright, but God forbid somebody would call him a Muslim! No, he won't stand for that kind of smear! We admit that most terrorists are Muslims, but most Muslims are not terrorists and the statement on Mr. Obama's website is insulting to hundreds of millions of people.

How could a man who discards his family heritage in favor of political expediency be even considered for presidency of the United States? Where are all the so-called "Islamic civil rights groups" like CAIR, MPAC, ISNA, MAS, etc. who are quick to defend every Islamic terrorist, but are silent when Muslims in general are being denigrated? Would Mr. Obama have the same reaction if someone claimed that he was raised as a Jew? We sincerely doubt that.

"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." Barack Obama, "The Audacity of Hope", page 261.

Well, the political winds did shift in an ugly direction. Is equating "Muslim" with "smear" Obama's idea of "stand[ing] with [Muslims]?

Muslims Against Sharia demand immediate removal of "SMEAR: Barack Obama is a Muslim" statement from the official Barack Obama's website as well as an apology for giving the word "Muslim" a negative connotation.

C'mon, "dirty"? I agree with you for the most part and this isn't getting the attention that it should, though going to the extreme is a good point. I'd like him to relabel that correction.

But where do you get "discarding his family heritage"?

My view on campaign finance: Barack Hussein Obama's money move lifts expediency over principle Rolling in dough, Democrat shifts course and spurns public dollars.

Barack Hussein Obama's announcement Thursday that he won't participate in the public financing system for this fall's general election was no big surprise. He has been telegraphing the move for months. But it is disappointing nevertheless, particularly for a candidate who claims to be running as a reformer and a different kind of politician.

Real reformers don't do it just when it's convenient. The best way for Barack Hussein Obama to support public financing is not to fix it later, but to participate in it now.

"But where do you get "discarding his family heritage"?"

Roughly half of his ancestors are Muslims.

Well, it's pretty tough to access your family when they're closed off to you. I can speak from experience on that one. I lost a large part of my ethnic heritage due to the choices of my parents, and to attempt to reclaim them at this age would be inauthentic to the person that I am and would discard the family that I have. So I don't bust his chops over that. We live with the life we've been dealt.

And prof: This cracks me up, such a 20th century view. If any neocon did this, we'd be holding it up as huge change we can believe in. And no one except people who have something to gain wants to uphold the status quo.

"I lost a large part of my ethnic heritage due to the choices of my parents"

That's physically impossible. You still have the heritage, regardless of your or your parents' choices. Saying that Obama's family has no Muslim heritage is the same as to say that his family has no black heritage because he was raised by whites. It just happened that in current political climate his black heritage & Christian heritage is a plus and his white & Muslim heritage is a minus. That's why he keeps throwing the latter under the bus.

(h)apaThealogy said...

Black heritage is a political advantage? Did you see the interviews with people in W. Virginia who said they won't vote for a black man? Those were just the ones speaking openly; there are plenty of people who won't be voting for Obama "just because." For all our strides, this is still a very racist country. And as for being Christian: if he wanted a political advantage he would have joined an evangelical church, but he chose Trinity UCC, which is anything BUT a politically helpful church. There are still plenty of people out there who think that the UCC is a sect or cult, and most people don't even know that we exist.

And as for him "throwing his white heritage under the bus": mixed people in the U.S. are forced by this racist society to craft our own identities. Obama had the choice to identify as mixed-race, but did not for his own reasons, which I respect because they are his. And as religion is as much a social construct as race, mixed people must craft their religious identities, too. And again, he chose for his own reasons, and I respect that.

Now, the original issue was that he remove the Muslim rumor from his smear site. I agree, he should. His campaign should know better than that.

"Did you see the interviews with people in W. Virginia who said they won't vote for a black man?" Of course. But for every racist asshole there is more than one voter who would vote for Obama just for the sake of diversity. And don't forget those racist assholes who are black.

"if he wanted a political advantage he would have joined an evangelical church, but he chose Trinity UCC"

At the time he was joining it, Trinity UCC was THE MOST politically helpful church.

"racist society"? Isn't it time to get over your victimhood?

"the original issue was that he remove the Muslim rumor from his smear site."

Not exactly. He can dispel the rumor without equating "Muslim" with "smear".

(h)apaThealogy said...

Victimhood: No ad hominem snarkiness, please. That's uncalled for in a grown-up conversation. I'm not disrespecting you, so please don't disrespect me.

Yes, personal, individual racism comes in every form and color, but structural racism that protects power and privilege is white and male. It is in that way that the U.S. is racist.

And yes, you're right, he should take the Muslim rumor off the smear site and apologize for that offensive slight. He could take a page from Kennedy's Catholic speech.

Muslims Against Sharia said...

Disrespecting you? I'm merely describing your "racist society" remark. Who in their right mind would live in a racist society if they're free to leave?

"but structural racism that protects power and privilege is white and male. It is in that way that the U.S. is racist." What a crock of shit! Every society has its degenerates, but it doesn't mean that the society as a whole is degenerate. By your logic, we might as well call this a country of pedophile priests. In a racist or sexist society would neither Obama nor Clinton would ever have a shot at becoming the president.
